The Original

10/6/2008. Size: 44″ waist pants, XXL shirts. 240 pounds. 5’10″ tall. It’s time to do something about this. It’s time to make a change. I want to see what kind of a body I can create.

10/19/2008. I’m not sure about this “CrossFit” thing. Sounds like it’s for firefighters, cops, and wannabe tough guys. But hey, my buddy did it, and he liked it. I’ll talk to the trainer.

10/24/2008. This trainer, Steve, talked me through it. Functional movements, constantly varied, infinitely scalable to create high intensity… hmm. The science makes sense. The math makes sense. He showed me how to modify my diet slightly to hit my weight targets, too… what the heck. I’ll give it 10 sessions, about a month, and see how it goes.  3 times a week won’t kill me.

He also took measurements. Jeez. Hey, at least I’m already losing some weight – cutting out the pizza helped already. 230 pounds. Body fat percentage… oof. Calipers. Scary.

Then there’s the workout.

10/26/08. I hurt so bad I can barely get out of bed. I don’t think working out is good for me.

11/7/08. Two weeks. 8 pounds lost. INCHES, lost – my pants fit a bit different. I’m sure this is short-term gains, though.

11/21/08. One month. 10 sessions. And somehow, I’m still losing inches and pounds. And, oddly, I’m getting stronger. More confident. Less afraid. I can do this.

12/25/09. None of my Christmas present clothing fits me. I weigh less than 200 pounds for the first time in well over a decade. What else can I do?

3/23/09. Five months in. I’m in the best shape of my life, and I’m just getting started. 170 pounds, 32 inch waist, medium shirts. Small, if I want to show off.

Amazing what 3 workouts each week can do, isn’t it? My story’s just getting started.

5/23/09.  Still keeping it off. 160 pounds. Time to play with it – I want handstands and a stronger back squat. I want more muscle. I know I can do this.

12/5/2009. 14 months in. I’m one week away from the Grand Opening of my very own CrossFit gym… because I am ready to offer you the same kind of revolutionary success that I experienced. Because I am ready to have a gym where I feel good about working out my way. Because I choose to keep only the best company – and I am excited about making friends with 200 of the finest humans in Boston, eager and ready to engage in creating the bodies and worlds that they desire.
