Lowdown on the Summer Solstice Team Showdown

This past Saturday CrossFit Fenway was represented by 4 teams in a field of 38 at the CrossFit Lando Summer Solstice Team Showdown, Karaoke Allstars (Amy and Ollie), Shouldahs Like Bouldahs (Mary and Kyle), Butt Test Graduates (Mandy and I), and Sean & Maralene (Maralene and Sean).

“FranRap”, or Partner Fran was a Frantastic way to start the day with forearm burn all around.  Shouldahs Like Bouldahs lived up to their name, putting up one of their better scores of the day, and beginning the process of turning their new grey tank tops a slightly darker shade.  Sean & Maralene had a while to wait for their first heat, so they wisely did the floater (50m sled push, 20 bumper plate ground-to-overhead, 50m sled push each) as a sort of warmup, then got through more than 2 and 2/3 Frans.

“Guys First” included power cleans, deadlifts, plate changes, shoulder-to-overhead, and burpees.  A majority of the workout was burpees.  Karaoke Allstars posted their best result of the day on this event.  ”Killing Me Softly With His Kettlebell” (150 kettle bell swings, “resting” athlete holding a handstand, 75 box jump overs, “resting” athlete holding a squat, 50 weighted lunges) was less kind to them, and much of the rest of the field.  Amy caught Ollie as he fell out of a handstand and sort of front squatted him up.  Mandy and I also had an incident.  While kicking up into a handstand I accidentally back-healed her “where the sun don’t shine”.  Despite this, we still had our best finish of the day, and along with Sean & Maralene (they won the event!), were among only 10 teams that finished within the time cap.  It probably goes without saying, but had roles been reversed we certainly would not have completed the workout.

btgAfter 3 workouts plus the floater, the top 6 teams qualified for the final, 10:00 to establish a 2RM front squat for total combined load relative to bodyweight.  Sean & Maralene made the cut, and squatted more than 1 1/2 times their bodyweight, good enough to finish in a tie for 4th!  Karaoke Allstars came in 31st, Shouldahs Like Bouldahs in 14th, and Butt Test Graduates in 9th, as predicted.  Great effort by all!  Thank you to those in the CFF community that came out to cheer us on (and take pictures)!

CFF to CFSV 5k & BBQ!  We’re very excited to announce our first ever CrossFit Fenway to CrossFit Somerville 5k and Barbecue, this Saturday, June 28th at 11:30 AM (shortly after Invasion). CFSV is almost exactly 3.14 miles away, so we’re bringing both communities together to kick off the summer with a 5k run capped off by a BBQ. All are welcome, and please feel free to bring friends and family.  We’ll have food, drinks, and rides back to the Fenway.  See you there!
