Mas Caraquena!

August 14, 2012
By

Last year around this time I wrote about my favorite restaurant, and my favorite dish at that restaurant.  Well, I’ve found that same dish, or at least a very close approximation closer than Watertown.  Last week Les and I went to Orinoco in Brookline Village (22 Harvard Street).  What you see pictured is parrilla caraquena, a grill plate that includes chorizo, steak, chicken, guacamole, and yucca frita.  No special orders (save for a side of plantains, of course), just a big paleo friendly plate of meat.  Orinoco has a couple other locations as well, in the South End at 477 Shawmut Street, and in Harvard Square at 56 JFK Street.  Apparently they’ve got a lot of other good stuff on the menu, and rumor has it their adult beverages are quite tasty, but I’ll probably stick to the parilla caraquena.  If you’re in any of these neighborhoods looking for a real good meal, I highly recommend giving Orinoco a try.

Rumor has it that I enjoy tasty adult beverages.
Seriously, though, nutrition plays an incredibly part in our training. When I eat poorly, I perform poorly. I feel I am at my best when I eat real foods. Lots of veg, some fruit, and grilled or baked meats. It’s not always the easiest thing to do, especially when my schedule gets busy, but it really makes a big difference.
    PP: 80kg PR
WOD: 6:03 Rx. – “J” wrap for first 2 rds, then grip was smoked from heavy KB swings, so I “S” wrapped the finally round. That last set of swings was not fun.

For some of you who may not have seen this, here is an awesome Olympic snatch video:

Between Mandy’s warmup which included pull-ups and knees-to-elbows, the push presses, the rope climbs, and the kettlebell swings, my shoulders are toast.

Push Press: 77kg (5 rep PR)
    WOD: 16:28 Rx

Yeah.. you read that right… over 16 minutes. I’m terrible at rope climbs, but I can do them – just not very quickly. And it took me 3 attempts to get that very last rope climb, as my grip was shot. Big thanks to my friends in the 7am class for sticking around and cheering me on. It really helped.

Sounds like a great warm up by Amanda Rochelle.

Scott, before you feel badly about 16 minutes, take a look at all of the PR’s you’ve been setting! And…AND…taking it a step further, did you ever think you could even climb a rope? Maybe when we were kids!

It’s easier said than done, but recognize the incredible accomplishments that you’ve made thus far and continue to make. (Special thank you to Shorty who talked me down from a teary pity party and of course, my #1 gal who just knows).

I’ll be there tonight to showcase how long rope climbs take me, which should be about 2 days.

In other news, I spilled chicken sausage juice on my keyboard.

Push Press: 35kg PR – helpful corrections from Joe :-)
    WOD: 6:39 Rx
Totally loved and totally smoked this workout! Never swung 24kg before – wasn’t bad but at over 1/3 body weight I thought I was gonna launch myself!
Almost cried with joy while lying on the floor after the WOD – I never thought I could do all the cool things I’m doing now! So happy to be a part of CFF – you are all awesome and I love being here!! (A lil sappy today) :-P

Sprint workout – went to Summit Ave and did 0:30/3:00 sprint/rest x 10. legs = toast. or is it jelly? maybe one of each.

  12. Mike G. on August 15, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Push Press – 92kg Sam told me I had to, so I did.

WOD – 7:20 Rx. 32kg is no joke for a kettlebell.

  13. brooke ilene on August 15, 2012 at 9:56 pm

    PP: 50 kg
    WOD: 12:58 RX. Boom.
