Well I’m not fired from the blog!! And to celebrate my return to the blog we have a member profile on our very own Dan Phipps!

Name/Nickname: Daniel Phipps/ Phipper (Crossfit)/ Phippy (Work)

Usual CrossFit Class Time (Mornings/Midday/Night): Midday

Occupation:  Remote Broadcast Technician. I provide replays and in-game highlights for the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, Revolution, and many more. Basically, I watch sports for a living. Not too bad. Hopefully, one day soon, I’ll be helping to provide coverage for local Crossfit events.

CrossFitting Since: April 2010. I headed back to work at Fenway Park, after a long winter at the TD Garden, to discover a strange new gym right down the street. I previously belonged to VIM Fitness, which is in Central Square in Cambridge. Pat Padgett, whom many of you know and is a personal trainer at VIM, filled me in on some of the basics of Crossfit. My first WOD (by myself) was a heavily scaled Linda, which is 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 reps of the triplet: Deadlift: 1 1/2 body weight, Bench press: body weight, Clean: 3/4 body weight. It was terrible. A couple of days later, Pat had me time him while he did Fran, which took him a little over 2 minutes. I then tried Fran, and failed miserably. My next move was sending an email to Eric Siegel at Crossfit Fenway.

Favorite CrossFit WOD: ”Nancy” 5 Rounds for time: Run 400m, 15 Overhead Squats (95, 65) – I’m not even that good at this WOD, but, for some reason, I really like these two movements together. That last 400 is like running through thick mud, and then you still have some OH Squats to get through. Brutal.

Favorite CrossFit WOD Song: At Fenway, I always enjoy when Skrillex’s “Bangarang” comes on. Jay-Z and Kanye’s “Paris” is another favorite. I tend to go a little heavier when I WOD alone. Lamb of God’s “Ruin” and Sick of It All’s “Take the Night Off” are always in heavy rotation.

Cheat Meal of Choice: I am from the North Shore, so I can devour a Super Beef “3 way” (cheese, sauce, and mayo) on an onion roll in about 90 seconds. It’s a spectacle.

Greatest CrossFit Achievement So Far: I would say I am most proud of my 353 on Fight Gone Bad and my 100kg Split Jerk. I look forward to my first competition.

One interesting thing about yourself not related to CrossFit: I recently won an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for my work on Fox’s coverage of Major League Baseball.

Complete the sentence: “CrossFit should…” be fun, kick your ass, and make you beg for more.

Why do you CrossFit: I am an athlete. Crossfit fulfills my competitive nature, while providing a strength and conditioning program that motivates. I also work nights and weekends, so joining a soccer, softball, or any other team is not a reality for me. Crossfit allows me to be a part of an athletic community despite my odd schedule.

Favorite CrossFit Moment: My first Fight Gone Bad. I had only been Crossfitting for a little over 4 months. It was my first time my fiancé (now wife) witnessed what Crossfit was all about. The suck factor was huge, but hearing her and others cheer me on helped me push through to another level. It’s a feeling I hadn’t had since running the 4x400m relay in High School track. That’s when I knew that this is where I belong.

    LBBS: 70kg. This matches my 1RM HBBS.

    Mandy, so glad to have you back.
    Dan, that’s a lot of names. And I thought my household was crazy. Congrats on your accomplishments and for working hard at your goals!

    LBBS: 70kg…this was funny, going from a warm up set of 40kg to 60kg…pretty sure I attempted 80kg..pretty sure Pearson is going to hire me for their Math Division. Pretty positive Joe laughs at me. It’s good.

    WOD: 11:24, 55 lb Farmers, could have gone higher, next time. I did however rebound 24″ box jumps, because there were only 5, so there’s that.

    Good to be back after being away!

    WOD: 16:29 @ 55lbs which kept slipping out and gave me huge bruises on my hands!

    Oh cool, my Crossfit bio! Now you all know a little bit more about me. Also, that photo is from me after my first Fight Gone Bad in 2010. I handled the pain a little better on my next go around with it in 2011.
    Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it into the box today, but I obviously had to do this workout.
    LBBS: 265#
    WOD: 9:41 @75# DB’s (Heaviest available)

    Thanks to all the coaches and athletes at CFF for the motivation and support. Over 2 years later, and this is still as fun and frustrating as ever.

    LBBS: 110kg, which is a bit frustrating since I was able to do 120KG for 5 reps just two weeks ago.
    WOD: 12:13 – Yeah… just wasn’t sure I had the 30″ box jump in me today, so I stuck with the 24″ and focused on not stopping to rest during the WOD. Unfortunately, it was still slower than I would’ve liked.

    Not the best day for me, but I’ll be back tomorrow for more!

    LBBS – 150kg (failed 160kg after 2 reps)

    WOD – 11:18 with 95# in each hand (not 50% cuz imma big fatty and the weights don’t go that high). 8^D

    LBBS – 82kg. That matched my 3 rep set from a couple of weeks ago; pretty happy with that.

    WOD: 15:31 w/70#, 17#/hand short of Rx. I always wimp out and go lighter than I should on farmers carry, worried I’m going to drop the weights right away. I wasn’t as far off this time, but still should have gone a little bit heavier.

    WOD: 12:19 Rx (32kg each hand).

    SO GOOD to be back! Oh man, I feel so great right now! It was so nice to see everyone today!

    For some reason I ridiculously loved this WOD – one of my favorites to date. I love farmer’s carry, so maybe that’s why. I could have gone faster, but I expected it to be more exhausting than it was.
